Thank you to all contestants of the 2022 KY Multi-scale Nano Image Contest!!!
Fifty Shades of Red Blood Cells ****MOST UNIQUE CAPABILITY WINNER***
Author: Charles Elder
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: Thermo Fisher Apreo SEM
Description: I am developing a method to freeze Red Blood Cells so
they can be preserved for possibly decades. During freezing the cells are loaded with compounds that are found
in the freezing solution. We believe this does not happen in a uniform fashion with some cells being loaded with
more compounds than others. In this SEM image you can see that the cells are under different stresses which is
why some look normal, and others look dead or extremely hypertonic. This may be because these cells were
loaded with different amounts of compounds from the freezing solution.
Rainbow Scales - ***MOST STUNNING CATEGORY WINNER***
Author: Evgeniya Moiseeva
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: FIE Apreo C SEM
Description: SEM image of the monarch butterfly wing. The is no current research behind the image just pure curiosity.
Micro-Beach: Just a Little Fun in the Sun - ***MOST WHIMSICAL CATEGORY WINNER***
Author: Rose Pham
KY Multiscale Core: EMC (UK)
Tool: Hitachi S-4300 SEM
Description: SEM image of the broken edge of a tin dioxide wafer (left). False colored and cartoons added to show a fun day at the beach on a stair-like slope towards the ocean.
Seta Flower
Author: Evgeniya Moiseeva
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: FEI Aprio C SEM
Description: SEM of the papoose setae of a beetle.
Nanohoneycomb
Authors: Dr. Jacek Jasinski from UofL Conn Center, Dr. Maria Carreon from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell.
KY Multiscale Core: UofL Conn Center
Tool Name: This scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image was obtained using a Tecnai F20 FEG TEM (FEI, Inc.) equipped with a High-Annular Angle Dark Filed (HAADF) detector (E.A. Fischione Instruments, Inc.).
Description: The hexagonal structure visible in the background of this image is the highly ordered porous nanostructure of zeolite sample synthesized by Radio Frequency plasma mediated method.
Bee Brush
Author: Evgeniya Moiseeva
KY Multiscale Core: MNTC (HICL)
Tool Name: FEI Apreo C SEM
Description: SEM of a pollen that got caught in bee hairs
Not Only Cute, But This Puppy "Lead" Us To Interesting Results
Author: Rose Pham
KY Multiscale: EMC (UK)
Tool Name: FEI Talos F200X TEM
Description: Elemental composition map of lead (Pb), shown in yellow, on top of Al2O3 grains. Map was collected by STEM EDS and the distribution of Pb in the image forms a puppy-like figure as indicated by the traced image on the right. (Left is the original image).
Life Sure Can Be Dry
Author: Charles Elder
KY Multiscale: MNTC (HICL)
Tool Name: Apreo C LoVac FESEM by ThermoScintific
Description: This micrograph depicts dehydrated red blood cells during preservation. Our lab is researching potential ways to increase the shelf-life of red blood cells. One approach is to store them dry for decades until they are required for transfusion.
Description:
Zeolite particle
Authors: Dr. Jacek Jasinski from UofL Conn Center and Dr. Maria Carreon from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell.
KY Multiscale Core: Conn Center (UofL)
Tool Name: This scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image was obtained using a Tecnai F20 FEG TEM (FEI, Inc.) equipped with a High-Annular Angle Dark Filed (HAADF) detector (E.A. Fischione Instruments, Inc.).
Description: Zeolite sample synthesized by Radio Frequency plasma mediated method. This unique porous structure allows the adsorption of ammonia in-situ during its synthesis reaction, protecting this important chemical from decomposition in electron mediated synthesis.
A Bit of Spooky Tungsten Surprise
Author: Rose Pham
KY Multiscale Core: EMC (UK)
Tool Name: FEI Talos F200X TEM
Description: STEM EDS image showing elemental tungsten (W) deposition on top of a FIB lamella. This skull image is only seen with the tungsten elemental mapping as opposed to the other elements within the lamella sample.
