Artificial Cicada Wing
KY MULTISCALE 2021 CONTEST WINNER! - Most Unique Capability Category
Author: Dr. Chuang Qu
NNCI KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: Thermo Scientific Apreo SEM
Real nanostructures on the wing of a Neotibicen canicularis (an annual cicada, also known as the dog-day cicada) (left) VS Artificial nanostructures on cicada wings (right). The artificial cicada wing nanostructures are created by Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD), a nanofabrication technique which has the unique ability to create a variety of self-assembled three-dimensional nanostructures by adjusting the angle of deposition and the rotation of the substrates. The replica owns the properties of the cicada wings, including super-hydrophobicity and antifouling.

A Naughty Creature
Author: Chuang Qu
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: Thermo Scientific Apreo SEM
A mysterious creature produced by Glancing Angle
Deposition (GLAD). When it smiles, the hexagonally packed teeth tell you how naughty it could be.
"Splat!"
Author: Julia Aebersold
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: Hitachi HT7700 TEM
The small transparent objects next to the dark blob are exosomes. These exosomes
come from inside the body and are messengers to other cells within the body. One area of research is the study of
exosomes to help develop therapies for cancer.
"Goose Bumps"
Author: Henry Nabeta
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: Thermo Scientific Apreo SEM
Q‐Griffithsin is a protein compound that is currently being developed as a drug to treat
virus infections. We recently made a new discovery that this protein can also prevent fungal infections. This image
shows Candida yeast cells that have been treated with Q‐Griffithsin. The rough surface with indentations and a wrinkled
appearance demonstrate that the protein disrupts the fungus cell wall, resulting in the death of yeast cells.

E. Coli Among Diamond NanoNeedles
Author: Jesse Rozsa & Jacek Jasinski
KY Multiscale Core: Conn Center (UofL)
Tool Name: MFG: Thermo/FEI Model#: Nova600
Researchers are looking for alternative ways to prevent infectious disease transmission via surfaces with active antimicrobial properties. Materials such as copper have natural antimicrobial properties but lose efficacy over time. Our research, led by William Paxton at UofL’s Conn Center, has developed a scalable, diamond-based, nanostructured coating able to mechanically destroy bacteria requiring no micro/nano fabrication. This surface has a sterilization efficiency comparable to pure copper but retains its efficacy over seven years when stored in standard atmospheric conditions. This image depicts how the diamond nanoneedle surface can disrupt E. coli by puncturing the cell wall, killing on contact.
The Inextinguishable Light of Hope
Author: Muhemmad Yassin
KY Multiscale Core: HICL (MNTC)
Tool Name: Thermo Scientific Apreo SEM
The image was taken during the 2021 IMPACT-NG REU program where I was working under Dr. Harnett. Our goal was to characterize gripper-to-fiber contact & adjust gripper designs accordingly.
Balloon girl is one trademark of Banksy's art decorated on the Palestinian side of the West Bank wall. Combined with the image of the single broken cantilever, William Inge's quote, & the Palestinian colors, this piece is intended to raise awareness to the plight of Palestinians & serve as a reminder that there’s always hope in a peaceful Palestine for everyone (despite the shackles of apartheid, illegal occupation & ethnic cleansing)!
